Why is it that I can lift (or at least feel that I can lift) more when I have one hand facing away from me and the other facing towards me for deadlifts than when I have both hands facing towards me?

because a dummy grip is easier. Less strain on the forearms.

be sure to alternate which hand is over/under, in order to prevent imbalances.

My trick is to go both hands over for 135,225 and 315. Then on 405 and maybe 495 I go underhand with my weaker left side. Then all my sets after that are with my stronger right side underhand. Hope this helps.
