Dan Henderson upset Wanderlei and now holds 2 belts.
Nick Diaz submits Gomi, Pride's LW belt holder.

Bravo Nick Diaz. I'm far from a big Diaz fan, but I'm even less so of Gomi. It's always irritated me how people thought Gomi was the #1 lightweight in the world just because he fights in Pride. I'm so glad Diaz exposed Gomi's glaring weaknesses. To me, that's not an upset at all. Gomi is just way overhyped.
And Gomi's talking all that nonsense about Sherk, Hughes, Penn, etc? Jigga' please- you would get mauled.
And wow, what's going on with Wandy? He didn't look right at all. He wasn't nearly as aggressive as he usually is. I really hope he can bounce back from his two losses. Good job, Hendo. Damn, the first man in MMA history to hold a belt in two different weight classes. That's some serious shit right there.
Trigg also provided serious evidence that Misaki's GP win was a fluke. Here again, to me this was no upset.
To me, the biggest upset of the night, by far, was Nog losing. Who would have thought it would go down like that??

That was the best ppv that I ever purchased.

It was indeed a great fight card.
I was really disappointed to see the empty seats through most of the fights, though, as well as all the stupid blonde groupies in the audience that they kept showing.

Yeah full of excitement. I agree, couldn't they have found nicer women to focus on? When the owner came out and talked, that sucked too.
I found it hillarious that they were calling out chuck and the ufc. In Wandy's intro clip they show chuck knocked out. Then wandy goes on to get ktfo.

It was indeed a great show, much better than the first one.
Wand did look tentative but most fighters do coming off a KO loss. I though he would try to get that out of his head and really push the action but he didn't. Like other fighters who get KOd he was too passive and it cost him. He shouldn't have taken this match after losing to Cro Cop. Instead he should have fought another can to boost his confidence then take on Dan. No disrespect to hendo though as he looked great and had no issues with cardio. Being a wrestler I wouldn't think that cutting weight would be a probably but he looked better at 205 than 183.
Gomi looked like crap and gassed badly. I don't know if he can't get up for a fight unless it's a title bout or not but that was an atypical performance. I'm not saying he's the best lw in the world but he's capable of better performances and that seemed out of character for him.
Pride really tried to hype up their fighters while demeaning those from the UFC and it cost them. The intros for Wand are bitter irony now as any hopes of that match-up are now out the window.

Does anybody know how successful this show was for Pride in terms of ticket sales and PPV buys?

Live gate was ~13,000 though who knows what percentage was comped. PPV figures are near impossible to guess. We may get figures for North America but we know Pride draws a big international audience as well. Even if they lost money they have a lot of people talking and the buzz created is invaluable.

PRIDE Fighting Championships' second U.S. venture saw 8,334 tickets sold for a gate just north of $2 million, the Nevada State Athletic Commission informed Sherdog.com on Wednesday.
The number of paid tickets bests PRIDE's October 2006 effort in Las Vegas by 255, though dollars at the gate dropped by $23,346. While Saturday's attendance was announced at 13,180, the NSAC lists 4,577 of those as being comp tickets.
Gross ticket sales of $2,033,098 places PRIDE 33, which saw Dan Henderson (Pictures) knock out Wanderlei Silva (Pictures) in the main event, ninth on Nevada's top MMA gate list, one spot behind PRIDE "Real Deal."
The Zuffa-promoted Ultimate Fighting Championship owns the top eight spots, with Dec. 30's Chuck Liddell (Pictures)-Tito Ortiz (Pictures) II card taking in $5.4 million at the gate.

That's not bad at all, IMO- breaking into the top 10 live gates again on their second try.

There were some rumors that some of the fights may have been 'fixed' at this show, if you know what I mean...
Only one I could really think of that looked like it might be fixed was diaz-gomi. Gomi... seemed to be acting, and badly, during most of the second half of the fight. "oh I so tired, oh look at me bounce off the ropes like a drunkard, oh I can barely stand..." Plus, it's not like he lost his title or anything. And look at Diaz's face, or what was left of it....
This is why I don't bet on fights. I would bet on my own fights by proxy of course, but that's because I would have alot more control over the outcome of the fight.. In fact, I could probably edit: LOSE just about any fight if I was trying hard enough. Of course, to make this profitable, I would have to win a bunch first.

There's rumors of works in practically every MMA event because someone's fighter didn't win so it had to be a work, no other possible explanation. Gomi is too arrogant to stage a work IMO. But while we're at it , I hear the Nog fight was a work cuz if you look at the punch it was clipping and didn't look like it had much power behind it. I hear the Yakuza purposely determined the outcome so they could cash in on the odds.

I thought Gomi might have been acting, too. I've never seen him fight like that before, where his arms are just completely down by his side and he's just standing there at times, taking punches.
Pride may have fixed it so that they can make Diaz look really good and hype up a rematch for the title.

If the money was right, I can't see anyone in their right mind turning down a deal like that, especially if they also bet against themselves heavily by proxy. That's what I would have done if I was gomi and they approached me about throwing the fight. I don't lose my title, and I make a SHIT TON of cash... hmm, tough choice.
Sir Savage
Mar 2 2007, 02:01 PM
Yeah.
But Pride's credibility is already on the line because they've been accused of fixing fights before, plus the fact that this fight was non-title which hurts the credibility of their belts, so you've got to wonder what Pride was thinking if they fixed this fight. Sure, they might make a lot of money on bets and payoffs from Yakuza, but to me, that's not worth the trade-off of damaged credibility.

Which one?
I highly doubt the fight was fixed. Gomi gassed and there's any number of reasons for it. Would he throw a fight, I can't say. I'm sure we all have our price but it didn't seem like the ideal scenario to do such. It would probably be better to conduct that in Japan for a number of reason I won't go into. But Gomi has stated that he doesn't care about non title match-ups because he has little to lose(the belt). He figures if he loses he will catch his opponent in the rematch and it also provides additional motivation while training. IMO he just got beat, no conspiracy abounds.
