Take a look at the bullshit lightweight rankings, in particular-

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...09&zoneid=2

Sherk is not even in the top 10!! The damn UFC lightweight champion of the world does not even make the top 10 lightweights. Yet, Nick Diaz, whom Sherk beat, is now at #4. And the guy that Diaz beat, Gomi, is still ranked higher than Diaz!!

What kind of nonsense is that?? But wait, it gets better.

Somehow, Sakurai makes the jump to #1 lightweight in the world, even though he lost to Gomi. And Kid Yamamoto, who doesn't even fight at 155, gets the #10 spot!!

Oh, and before I hear the "Diaz lost to Sherk at 170" stuff, let me just go ahead and address that- it doesn't matter that it was at 170. It wouldn't be any different at 155 or 160. Their fight weights would have been basically the same as they were at 170.

In other news, Wandy drops to #5 in the light heavies, Hendo at #4 with his win over Wandy, and Trigg breaks top 10 at 185 with his win over Misaki.

It's mmaweakly, what else needs to be said.

HW top ten is the only one I would agree with. The lw rankings are a complete joke. Sherk should be number #1. Diaz with just one fight shouldn't even crap top 10. And like you said Kid fights at 143 and he was focusing on the Olympics moreso than MMA. I may still put gomi as #2 due to his overall record but he is a paper champ. Mach at #3 would be fair and by year's end hopefully a champ.
Sir Savage
But I think Diaz has to crack the top 10. After all, he just took out the "#1" lightweight. I don't have a problem with that, I just have a problem with him being ranked ahead of Sherk, Gomi being ranked ahead of Diaz even after his loss to him, Sakurai jumping to #1 despite his loss to Gomi, and Yamamoto being #10 when Sherk isn't even top 10.

Seriously, how the hell do they come up with this stuff?

Rankings are (edit: intristically) dumb, period.

Sherk, while he IS the UFC LW champ, has all of 1 fight at LW afaik. To be ranked in the top 10 in the WORLD with only 1 fight at that weight is... premature to say the least, IMO.

Sherk will be listed, I'm sure, once he gets a few more fights under his belt, at LIGHTWEIGHT.

By that logic Diaz shouldn't be ranked either. But Sherk has fought at lw perhaps just not in the UFC. Sean should be in the top 3 if not #1 and he was ranked last time so I wonder why they decided to exclude him. I'm sure they probably just forgot.

But that still isn't a good argument. If top boxers or wrestlers drop a weight class, they are still ranked at the top of the new weight class. When Randy Couture dropped from heavy, he was a top contender automatically.

You don't lose ability or skill when you drop a weight class. If a guy is a top fighter in a higher weight class, then there's no reason to not show that fighter the respect he deserves in the new weight class by ranking him in the top 10 where he belongs.
SonOfThor
What was his ranking in his former weight class(es)??

Also, I don't follow boxing, so you'll have to forgive my ignorance on that particular subject.

Sir Savage
At 170, Sherk was top 5 for years- as high as #3, as low as #5.
