Problems with popular nutrition and weight management programs
Generic recommendations, blanket statements that apply to everyone
It’s obvious that an optimal program for one individual is not optimal for everyone. To optimize program effectiveness a numerous factors should be included (activity, genotype, primary goals, metabolic abnormalities, past experience with dieting, various responses to meal frequency, psychological issues, convenience issues, food availability, support system, etc..). Common examples of over generalizing would be assuming RDA recommendations are applicable to everyone (even under conditions of heavy activity output, sickness, low carb diets, very low calorie consumption etc..) and set calorie levels for everyone (doesn’t seem to matter that one performs hard physical labor and exercises on a daily basis and the other one types real hard all day- this is common practice among most popular programs).
Relying on pseudo science for science information
Reliable scientific information is derived from Primary Scientific Research (original measurements and recording done by researchers conducting the research, whether in field or lab - when analyzing Primary Scientific Research Data you must consider research design, how you extrapolate results, who is conducting research and is there monetary interest in design- what do they have to gain or lose). Secondary research takes a look at Primary Research and analyzes it . Depending on the skill and biases of the reporter secondary research can be good or bad. A key consideration is whether or not the group or individual who is advising you has looked at the current Primary Scientific Data or has relied on Secondary Research. To be honest in most cases neither. The information they promote was passed on to them by someone who may or may not have knowledge of the Primary Scientific Research. People who often promote themselves as scientists do not actually look at the Primary Research Data. The ones that do are often bias towards a particular outcome, thus not really seeing or completely reporting what the research indicates.
Considering weight loss only as a measurement of success
Weight loss comes in various forms.( including fat, body proteins, water, toxins, glycogen, and mineral storage, etc..). Considering body composition can be important for health, performance and physique purposes.
Weight management groups who sale food and or supplements and insist you must take these products
Supplements can offer a positive role in weight management, but they are not magic or supreme to efficient nutrition intake from food (no evidence to indicate supremacy of supplements over whole food). Understand what the word supplement means supplement the program not replace. Sound nutrition and exercise regimens should be the cornerstone for any respectable nutrition program.
I am not anti-supplement, but are anti false information. Sometimes supplements are beneficial as they can be more convenient than food, cheaper, and help in acquiring efficient nutrition. If you need supplements to get the job done go for it. At the same time pre-packaged foods and massive quantities of supplements are not necessities for weight loss. A company that requires you to buy their supplements or food are not interested in optimizing weight management and nutrition status, but are interested in fooling you into believing their products have some magic properties.
