Popular diets: Hale’s Review
By Jamie Hale

With so many diet plans and books on the market how do you choose which one to follow? Which diets will work for you? In this review I will give a brief review of some of the most popular diets on the market today. After reading the review you will be able to decide which plans are appropriate for you.

The following is an excerpt from Knowledge and Nonsense and also appeared in Planet Muscle.

Atkins’ New Diet Revolution

Robert C. Atkins is the founder of Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. Atkins is also the founder and former director of the Atkins Complimentary Medicine in New York City.

The diet is a low carb high fat diet with no restrictions on fat intake. The diet begins with an induction phase (ranging from 2-36 weeks) limiting carb intake to only 20 g/d. The consumption of fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables, and dairy other than cheese, cream or butter are prohibited in this phase of the diet. There are two phases following the induction phase where daily carb intake is increased in weekly increments of 5gms & 10gms. Then, comes the maintenance phase.

Proponents of high-fat, low-CHO diets dismiss the notion that caloric intake is

Interview with the Fat Loss TroubleShooter
By Jamie Hale

The following interview was conducted with Leigh Peele (Author, Nutrition and Exercise Consultant from North Carolina).

J Hale: How does it feel to be a female in an industry that consists of mostly males?

L Peele: Honestly it has ups and downs, more so in person. I think in print there is something A-sexual about my delivery, I can joke with the boys so to speak so people almost forget I am a female and make no judgments in that aspect. I rarely get "for a girl she knows her stuff" kind of comments. In person it can be a bit more trying, but you push through it and you show what you got. I would also be lying to say it didn't matter, I mean I can't……. http://www.maxcondition.com/page.php?110

Intermittent Fasting
What is your thoughts/exper. with IF as it pertains to adding LBM when compared to more trad. bulking (but not crazy surplus)?

I realize you have a section in the book devoted to this, I just don’t have mine yet. most of the info out there is directed at the dieting down or recomp. benefits of IF but what about "adding on" instead of "pairing down"…. http://www.maxcondition.com/e107_plugins/f...wtopic.php?1676

Question: I joined a Fitness club last week and they tested my flexibility. The test they used was a sit and reach test. Do you think this is a good test of flexibility?

Answer: There is no One test that measures overall flexibility (range of motion of a specific joint). Flexibility varies from joint to joint, shows different properties under static versus dynamic conditions, and involves all components of the musculoskeletal system, as well as various types of stretch reflex. Testing overall flexibility would require numerous tests.

Question: When teaching Olympic Weightlifting do you teach the double knee bend? I have read that some coaches feel like teaching the double knee bend is necessary.

Answer: I don’t teach the double knee bend. This occurs naturally with good technique. Weightlifting Coach Gayle Hatch says “The mechanical action in the second part of the pull known as the double knee bend or scoop is the result of proper technique and is not a direct conscious act in itself. This action should not be taught. Having coached athletes and Olympic Weightlifters for thirty years at all levels, ranging from novice to national champions and Olympians, I can personally vouch that the majority of coaches who endeavor to teach the double knee bend fail”.
