It is almost as good as their Philosophy of Biology program.
Mr.Kite
Thanks everyone. I guess I hadn't mentioned before but my area of specialization is Philosophy of Mind, with interests in philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language. I'm deciding between Duke and UNC right now (I withdrew my acceptance from UMD already), and waiting on NYU and Columbia.

Haha actually I had that title before I applied, but I think you are right, I should update it now. smile.gif

Did you go to Duke? I know you are somewhat of the resident philosopher yourself, from reading your posts at least (and not knowing your actual background story).

As to what a PhD in philosophy does, well they sit around and think.. Really hard:

But really, I want to write for a living, and writing philosophy is one of the kinds of writing I enjoy most. Furthermore I am endlessly fascinated by the mind, so I figure being a professor of philosophy would be a nice position, since they pay you to write and collaborate with other really smart people. Sure you have to do some teaching, but oh well.

I think you should work with Owen Flanagan! Mind you, working with Nagel (or Unger) at NYU would be superb. And Columbia's Christopher Peacocke has a Wilfred Sellars-like capacity to draw from both the analytic and continental traditions with fluidity and facility.

I've just had the opportunity to work with a number of Duke faculty during the course of my academic meanderings.

Do you think you can produce anything the magnitude of (Wittgenstein's) Tractatus?

You should come to USC and hit me up haha. I've taken 2 phil classes (Logic and Intro) here and they are pretty cool. It's pretty abstract stuff, but I enjoy it.

So today was the deadline for notification (or D-Day as us applicants call it), and I decided against Maryland, Duke, Texas, and Columbia; and have accepted the offer of admission at University of North Carolina: Chapel Hill. I am glad all of this is over with, it has been very stressful.

Ras, I met Owen, and he was a great guy. Unfortunately he is working more on ethics and the self now, so our interests are diverging. That in concert with other concerns, led me to turn Duke down. I do hope, however, to have him on my thesis committee nonetheless, because of the amount of sharing that happens between UNC and Duke.

Did anyone catch the family guy episode where Peter became a philosopher? Shit, ive forgotton the punchline, but it was funny as shit.

Anywho, a sincere congratulation good sir. How exactly did you get it fully funded? I didnt know they gave academic scholarships for doctorate programs. But then again, I dont know a lot... unsure.gif

Actually it is rather common place to get full funding for all PhD's. The only graduate work you have to pay for are professional schools - Buisiness, Law, the assorted schools in Medicine (and masters in anything). You, of course, have to TA and/or teach classes, but the stipend is generally livable and the teaching load isnt too strenuous.

That said, I am getting Tuition + Health Insurance + ~14k a (school) year to attend UNC's PhD program (you can get additional summer funding some years, which is worth 4k).

This isnt my own assumptions about what goes on. This is from straight up questioning grad students (like 10+) and I got the same sorts of answers from all of them. As a result I trust that UNC doesnt over load their grad students (in fact they have a reputation for the opposite), and that you can live on the stipend (that I have no question about, I am living in a very expensive city now, on around 11k a year rather comfortably).

The only problem is that it is very supervisor specific. For example, T-ViXen, who is doing a Ph.D. in Neuromechanics, is working 20+ uncompensated hours in addition to her T.A./R.A. responsibilities and course instruction. She is working at a university which is known for excellent treatment of its graduate students with regard to workload and compensation. That being said, I sincerely hope you are right!!!

Congratulations, Mr. Kite.

I'm studying philosophy of religion in an M.A. program at Yale, so I've gotten to take a bunch of classes here with DeRose, Szabo, Bealer, and Co. Not going the Ph.D. route myself, but several of my friends are. Doesn't Simon Blackburn still hang out at Chapel Hill?

He is actually rejoining the faculty part time this fall, which is exciting (he is doing one semester at Chapel Hill, and one a Cambridge). Chapel Hill also made an offer to L.A. Paul (an up and coming metaphysician at U Arizona), and made two junior hires (fresh from post docs).

DeRose is great, I love his version of contextualism... and Yale is definitely an up and coming program. I expect it will be pushing the top 10 in the next few years. By the way, if you don't mind me asking, is the Yale M.A. program funded?

No, my program isn't directly through the philosophy department even though I take most of my classes there. Gotta pay, though not very much, all things considered.

It's been fun to have a front seat for some of the relatively hot topics in epistemology. Hearing DeRose talk about hashing it out with Stanley is entertaining.
