What ratio of whey to cassein is appropriate for a meal replacement blend? I'd arbitrarily choose something like 1:2 ratio of whey:cassein, but I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

I have my cassein mixes like this and like it plenty:
50% Whey Protein Isolate Ion-Exchange
40% Calcium Caseinate
10% Micellar Casein

Why not just use whey and skim milk. I just seems to get expensive for a meal replacement.

A whey casien blend post workout is supposed to be good. I think desinger supplements came out with a protein supplement that used both in postworkout, it is supposed to be better than whey alone.

DS's protein, Sustain, was fabulous and fucking delicious. It's discontinued now, but here's hoping they'll bring it back.

I buy my protein blend from Trueprotein.com. The "Team Skip" blend is one-third each of micellar casein, cold-filtered whey isolate and egg white. Great protein, and you can choose which sweeteners, flavours and supps you might like to add. Comes in a big bag, so it's easy to ration it out and keep the rest sealed tight away from air. You can get a tub if you like, I prefer to keep it airtight though.

Thanks for the responses! I'm looking for something fairly slow-release (and avoiding the insulin response from milk), but it looks like most of the blends mentioned contain far less cassein than I anticipated.

I'll have to check out some of those custom blends since some products that I'd like to mimic are just too damn expensive.

Captain, do you feel like you get enough of the benefits of micellar cassein with the 10% to just make the rest calcium casseinate?

Milk protein isolate is a cheap way to get your casein - it's 80% casein, 20% whey. I typically get this mixed with some additional whey. Tastes a bit "chalky", but it's certainly tolerable.

I buy the trueprotein night time blend. I feel their ratios are sufficient.
That is what I was refering to.
For a meal replacement I typically take the cassein blnd I mentioned. Then I mix it with 1/2 cup oatmeal, 2-4 tbs peanut butter, 8 ounces milk, 8 ounces water.
It tastes very good and has slow digesting carbs, healthy fats and slow releasing proteins

Ultra Peptide 1.0 is pretty damn incredible, and for a limited time Dave will be releasing a Peanut Butter version, the same flavoring as DS Sustain (he made the flavor) Should be very similar, if not a tiny bit better.

Yep.

I'm a fan of Ergopharm's Mass Meal. You can get it for $20 on bulknutrition.com. The protein in it is Whey protein Isolate (WPI) and Micellar Casein.

i just like protein shakes. I really do. Like Xtreme Formulation's Ultra Peptide (not v2.0). It just tastes damn good and no carbs. I wish it's all the protein I needed.

Straight MPI was WAY too thick for me.

that was the one you tried about 1 year ago from TP?

I noticed from TP, the MPI from ~ 1 year ago was more gel-like consistency, very nice for thick shakes

now the MPI from TP is a bit chalky, and less gel-like, i.e a bit more watery, not so great anymore for thick shakes

Wonder if this affects the digestion rate. Could not find a difference between those two though
rpen22
Actually, it was from All The Whey. I've never tried TP's MPI.

Word. If they came out with strawberry v1.0 I'd probably eat the whole tub straight....dry.

My understanding: It depends.

If you use MRPs or a protein powder as your sole source of protein, you want something like

http://tinyurl.com/5wfav3 or http://tinyurl.com/5ex7rb

(a blend of mostly casein & whey, leaning towards the casein side). If you're adding the protein powder to a diet containing "real food," however, whey is better, as whole food proteins are already "sustained release." It's much cheaper, too.

There was at least one interesting recent study done on this.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I could have just said upfront that I'm thinking of using the Velocity Diet which is almost solely shakes for 4-6 weeks. The question applies more generally, but that was the initial impetus.

Trueprotein is pretty damn cool.

Heard Chris Shugart's interview on The Fitcast...and now the dude is my hero. T-Mag or not. ( The Velocity Diet works).
