We have a regularly recurring thread here that asks "What should I do to get my doctor to prescribe x?"

This study would seem to indicate that the best route is to tell him you have used x before and it worked well.

Something along the lines of "I know I am not supposed to do this but my buddy gave me some of his Adderall tabs and when I took them I really felt calm and focused..." might be just the ticket to your very own amphetamine script but it looks like this sort of line is more likely to work with your family doctor than with your psychiatrist.

What you've mentioned is a bit related to the first reply at this link I stumbled upon:
Yahoo Answers

I want to get Adderall, and I think the best way is to tell my psychiatrist 1)I think I have adhd-inattentive, though not many of its symptoms were present when I was aged 7(is this a great barrier to getting it?), 2)my friends have said something about adderall, and 3)ask him whether it's right for me.

Congrats on 7000 posts!

GP's are moronic dipshits in Vancouver. It doesn't matter what you come in with, you always end up with a bottle of tylenol. It's their solution to everything. My family doc doesn't even Rx anti-depressants, let alone the "kiddy cocaine" ritalin. I no longer visit any of them after being told to 'suck up' the pain of an inflamed pancreas. Unless you can find a psychiatrist in this city, you're left a psychotic wreck.

Correction: GPs, in general, are moronic dipshits. Well, for most neuroscience related things, anyways.

I can see this being very true. A very common response from a doctor is "what has worked for you in the past" in fact, we are taught to ask that in school. It makes actually 'practicing' medicine a lot easier if you know it will work.
